 Description   

Installing 2.1 at LLNL for testing, encountered the following collision:

---> Package lustre-ldiskfs.x86_64 0:3.3.0-2.6.18_194.17.1.el5_lustre.g94d9119_gd5e659b set to be updated

libcom_err.so.2 is in our e2fsprogs package.
On RedHat, libcom_err.so.2 is in a separate e2fsprogs-lib package.

This may be the result of the packaging mis-match between our e2fsprogs package and
the RHEL setup.

Sorry, incomplete.

  • the libcom_err.so.2 change collides with a bunch

Is that the entire output of the yum transaction? It seems to be missing any specific errors. Can you paste the entire output into this bug?

There looks to be a couple of problems:

--> Processing Dependency: e2fsprogs = 1.39-23.el5 for package: infinipath-psm

That's a dependency we are never going to be able to satisfy if we continue to lead ahead of RHEL's own released version of e2fsprogs. It's likely that it's a case of "too strict" a dependency in infinipath-psm and needs to be relaxed.

As for the libcom_err.so.2 and krb5-libs message, I'm not really clear what it's telling us, which is why I suspect that I'm not seeing the entire output from the yum transaction.

There is framework in the e2fsprogs repo for making a release that matches the vendor's release by using the vendor's e2fsprogs SPEC file. I believe that this is how the SLES releases are done. Making this happen for Redhat is something that the e2fsprogs maintainer needs to do and maintain.

Currently to build images at LLNL I must use rpm --nodeps --force
to install e2fsprogs and lustre-ldiskfs. So the image creation involves an
additional hand-hacking step atm.

It seems like we need to start building e2fsprogs on rhel/centos using the vendor's spec rather than our feeble attempt at a single spec that keeps all distros happy. There is framework in our e2fsprogs patches for this already and IIRC, the sles11 build utilizes this, for an example to work from.

From the Oracle's Lustre Operation Manual:

If e2fsprogs is already installed on your Linux system, install the Lustre-specific e2fsprogs version by using rpm -Uvh to update the existing e2fsprogs package.

For example:
$ rpm Uvh e2fsprogs<ver>

The rpm command options --force or --nodeps are not required to install or update the Lustre-specific e2fsprogs package. We specifically recommend that you not use these options. If errors are reported, notify Lustre Support by filing a bug.

I discussed and tried the '-U' option with e2fsprogs on Friday with Cliff when I was doing this testing:

"...with the U it succeeded - and subsequently ldiskfs installed without error ..."

Our latest version of lustre e2fsprogs (version 1.41.90.wc1) contains an upstream fix for a problem seen in Fedora:
Description of problem:

Some pieces of software that use libcom_err fail to find it
during the configure step because the library is in /lib64
while the header file is in /usr/include/et instead of
/usr/include. While there is only one Fedora package at
present that requires libcom_err-devel (krb5-devel), this
sometimes causes difficulty in building unpackaged software
and requires manually setting CFLAGS.

This version should be tested to see if it fixes some of the upgrade problems.

There are two of solutions to the problem of conflicting packages today:

  • update our e2fsprogs.spec.in file to conditionally split the e2fsprogs RPM
    for RHEL6, so that we package a separate e2fsprogs-libs RPM, and disable
    libcom_err, libuuid, etc.
  • use the upstream RHEL6 e2fsprogs.spec.in file and patch it to add in ldiskfs,
    e2scan, etc as needed, as Brian suggested.

I haven't actually looked at the two options to see which one might be easier
to implement.

Robert, this only built for RHEL5, but Jenkins needs to be updated to also add do the RHEL6 build to test this patch.

Robert doesn't really have much to do with Jenkins these days. I've re-triggered change 472 with the combination filter removed. The expectation now is that e2fsprogs-reviews should build successfully on 32/64-bit EL5/EL6.

It looks like the most recent build (#11) for x86_64/el6 completed successfully, while the first one for this patch (#8) for x86_64/el5 also passed, but has failed for all subsequent builds due to some kind of problem in the test harness, AFAICS:

The i686 builds are all failing due to internal regression test failures in f_messy_inode, which is already described in LU-193 and predates any changes I made.

In any case, I believe that change 472 is ready to land so that RHEL6 testing can continue.

Patch has been merged, closing bug. I don't know how to get the resulting RPMs into the test node images, however...

RPMs were build for x86_64/el5 and x86_64/el6. An existing problem is preventing the i686 RPMs from being built.
