 Description

When running the sanity test (and possibly others) we get a message:

awk: cmd. line:1: warning: regexp escape sequence `\ ' is not a known regexp operator

This happens when a space is being escaped by a back-slash which isn't required.  There are various places in various shell scripts where quoting is incorrect and/or clumsy.
