This is likely related to LU-2689. It may be caused by the changes to the ROOT FID in LU-2240 http://review.whamcloud.com/5134.

For a 2.4 client/2.1 server this looks to be addressed by the patch http://review.whamcloud.com/5289 attached to LU-2689.
