The issue here seems relate to checkstat -f file /mnt/lustre/d27/fdef run before dd. I tried this manually and found that it worked without run checkstat.

This only failed on fc18 client

From the client log, it failed at ll_file_open():

Patch landed on 2.4. Let me know if more work is needed and I will reopen this ticket.
