The note in Section 18.5.1. "Checking File System Free Space" contains the following statement. If the underlying file system has fewer free blocks than inodes, then the total inode count for the file system reports only as many inodes as there are free blocks. This is done because Lustre may need to store an external attribute for each new inode, and it is better to report a free inode count that is the guaranteed, minimum number of inodes that can be created. I believe this is no longer the case in Lustre 2.1 and lfs df -i now reports the true number of inodes on the MDT. |

One caveat still remains on the "lfs df -i" free inodes value shown for the MDT:
