few tests (e.g. sanity/399a) require a real hardware checking for performance which is hard to guarantee in VM. so such tests ignore errors being run in VM and thus they need to be able to detect VM.
this is done in running_in_vm() which doesn't recognize "Bochs" reported by qemu-system-x86_64
