As per the discussion, it's better to open file(s) to be migrated at early stage when the pathname or fid is parsed from command line arguments/stdin/LIST_FILE. Then pass the fd down to various functions.

Some functions may be splitted into an internal function which accepts fd, and wrapper functions which open filename/fid and call the internal version.
